Freies Wahlfach ‘Communication and Culture in Cambridge’
For the seventh time, our pre-term study week in England took us (Neil Stainthorpe, Gudrun Keplinger and 21 English students from the third and seventh semester secondary) to the inspiring surroundings of Cambridge, the home of one of the world’s leading - and oldest - universities. This year, for the second time, we were able to offer the excursion as an optional subject within the framework of the new secondary curriculum.
Students each presented one chosen aspect of culture focussed on Cambridge or London in addition to written work on additional topics.
They were able to experience what it is like to live in an English family, had lessons at the Studio Cambridge Language School, and were able to visit St. Bede’s Inter-Church Secondary School, all of which ensured that the students experienced a lively intercultural exchange.
A tour of Cambridge, excursions to London including lunch in the oldest pub, ‘Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese’, for some students a superb performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at ‘Shakespeare’s Globe’, for others a visit to the Warner Bros. Studio in Watford, cream tea at ‘The Orchard Tea Garden’ in Grantchester were also part of the programme, as well as punting tours on the river Cam, where the students displayed great skill at steering the punts.
