L040 - M&M's:Motivation, Memorability& Meaningful language learning · Maxing the effective use of SONGS in the English language classroom

This workshop on how to use songs most effectively to enhance long-term language learning will not only be an experiential exploration of a range of classroom activities using songs which have a proven track record.
It will also provide the participants with a repertoire of techniques that they can use in a range of different contexts. We will set out a principled rationale for using songs in ELT, but most importantly we will see and experience how the carefully integrated use of the authentic input offered by this part of popular culture can make language learning enjoyable and effective.

L056 - From 'cool' to 'bae' and beyond · Young people's language over the years

Every generation creates its own slang, and in our digital age it is changing quicker than ever before.
But do young people really say anything new? Or is it just the way they say it that's different from their parents?
For sure, young people's language reflects their sense of belonging to a community. And when it becomes widely known it has no more use, so it is constantly changing.
After a history of youth slang from the 50s on we will focus on recent phenomena such as: uptalk and valley girl speak; quotative 'like'; vocal growl; Multicultural London English. Come along and find out more!

L062 - Using Positive Psychology Activities in the EFL Classroom

Positive psychology and optimism go together.
Many recent studies confirm that a better attitude about life is likely to make you more productive and even live longer. Within our classrooms we can also improve the atmosphere by ensuring an optimistic attitude in ourselves and promoting it in our students.
In this workshop we look at the value of optimism, how you can improve it and how to help students form more optimistic and positive views to help them learn better, be happier and more successful.

L071 - Creative approaches to teaching communicative grammar · From knowing grammar to using grammar

These days, communicative is the word. Even grammar should be taught communicatively. But how? The key is to look at ways to teach grammer to the whole brain, so students do not only know the rules, but can actually produce grammatically correct language. One major benefit in communicative grammar is its fostering of a student-centered classroom by placing teachers in the facilitator’s position. The active role taken by students prepares them for the outside world when interacting with other speakers of English, and provides an excellent foundation for autonomous learning.

L095 - Liven Up your lessons! · Let's look on the bright side of both language teaching and learning

Standing at the front of the class explaining things on a whiteboard or using exercises from a good course book are useful ways in which to teach a language.

HOWEVER, if this style of teaching dominates a lesson, it can get a little boring, to say the least.

This workshop aims to help you bring some FUN into the classroom. We will look at the benefits of interactive lessons and look at ways to properly engage students using games, tasks and activities that will keep them talking and even smiling about the lesson long after the bell has gone!

L116 - The Gift of the Gab · Games and Activities for the SECONDARY Classroom

In this workshop you will get to know some 'gripping' games and activities that serve as an addition to coursebooks in order to breathe some life into them and spice them up.
The emphasis is on interaction and communication, trying to boost the learners' confidence and break the ice, so as to make them confident users of English.
Above all, the activities will provide students with a natural incentive to speak and give them ample leeway to practise and experiment with the target language.
The title of Markus Wiesinger's recently published book - THE GIFT OF THE GAB pretty much sums it up.
