L023 - Teaching grammar and vocabulary communicatively and effectively

This workshop will explore in a principled but hands on, experiential way how we can make our teaching of grammar and vocabulary maximally effective.
We will look at how we can develop in our learners both the knowledge of language system that they need and, crucially, the ability to use that knowledge to underpin real communication skills, so that teaching which is truly ‘kompetenz orientiert‘ is also stimulating, enjoyable and memorable for all involved in the language learning process.

L037 - Try talking in my shoes: Empathy in Language Teaching

Empathy may be one of the qualities that distinguishes an average teacher from an excellent teacher in the eyes of the student.
In this workshop we will examine the importance of empathy in language education and propose a number of highly practical and creative activities inspired by literature and short films that foster empathy among both teachers and students.

L060 - Smart Teaching · Ways of Using Smartphones in your English Class

In this hands-on workshop we will explore how handy smartphones can be. They facilitate a more flexible, personalised and interactive learning experience.
We will look at the features they offer, discover mobile apps and discuss new ways of communication.
The key question will be how the use of smartphones can supplement your teaching in a way that you feel comfortable with.
Your students like using their smartphone,so why not turn this into an advantage?
To get the most out of this session, be prepared to try things on your smartphone (or tablet). However, this is not a must.

L063 - The Gift of the Gab · Games and Activities for the EFL classroom

In this workshop you will get to know some gripping games and activities that serve as an addition to coursebooks in order to breathe some life into them and spice them up.
The emphasis is on interaction and communication, trying to boost the learners' confidence and break the ice, so as to make them confident users of English.
Above all, the activities will provide students with a natural incentive to speak and give them ample leeway to practise and experiment with the target language.
The title of Markus Wiesinger's recently published book - THE GIFT OF THE GAB pretty much sums it up.

L068 - Liven Up your lessons! · Let's look on the bright side of both language teaching and learning

Standing at the front of the class explaining things on a whiteboard or using exercises from a good course book are useful ways in which to teach a language.

HOWEVER, if this style of teaching dominates a lesson, it can get a little boring, to say the least.

This workshop aims to help you bring some FUN into the classroom. We will look at the benefits of interactive lessons and look at ways to properly engage students using games, tasks and activities that will keep them talking and even smiling about the lesson long after the bell has gone!

L072 - Developing life-long language competences

In the last few years the word COMPETENCES has been the most loved and the most hated term in education.
In this seminar we will be looking at how to help our learners reach the required language competences rather than spending most of our class-time on practicing the exam formats. We will be looking at how elements of task based teaching (TBT), learner autonomy, extensive reading, self-guided learning outside the classroom (SGT) and technology enhanced language learning can do much MORE for our students than following our textbooks slavishly.
Join in and find out!

L080 - So to speak... · Promoting Speaking Skills

This one-day workshop focuses on developing speaking skills and showcases a variety of practical teaching ideas. We consider why it can be confusing for learners when they are asked to speak in class and explore ways to offer students structure, support and encouragement. We discuss the importance of selecting appropriate contexts for speaking tasks and offer ideas for appropriate planning, preparation and practice. We also consider the practicalities of preparing students for success in the Matura orals, focusing in particular on simple – and teachable - strategies and techniques.
