L010 - Virtual Tea Time · Monthly updates on current affairs and esl research

Teachers of English love speaking the language. This online series provides a virutal room for teachers to train English, discuss research on esl teaching, exchange experiences, challenges, tips and tricks for the classroom. There is always a “special topic” and material to try out in class. Occasional “surprise guests” add an extra something to the sessions. Participants are also welcome to join only one or two of the meetings, so flexible participation is fine and new discussion of dates possible.

Ziel dieser CLIL-Fortbildung ist, dass die teilnehmenden Lehrkräfte aus AHS und BHS lernen, das eigene Fach auf Englisch zu unterrichten.
Die teilnehmenden Lehrkräfte können die erarbeiteten Unterrichtssequenzen unmittelbar nach Rückkehr in ihrem Unterricht verwenden und in den einzelnen Schul-Arges den Kolleg/innen weitergeben. Da vom NILE (Norwich Institute of Language Education) auch sehr viel digitales Unterrichtsmaterial verfügbar ist, ist dies eine sehr praktikable Methode.

As global citizens, we are training vital skills to cope with the changes in our global world and classrooms. Creativity, critical thinking, and IT skills will be applied to our jobs as AHS/BMHS teachers. Naturally, we are also learning about the Irish history, culture and country.

L024 - Digitales Geschichtenerzählen im Fremdsprachen-Unterricht · Englisch, Französisch, Italienisch und Spanisch

Die Teilnehmer/-innen erhalten eine Einführung ins digitale Storytelling und erstellen ihre erste digitale Story. Zudem begleitet sie dieses Seminar bei der Planung und Durchführung eines Digital Storytelling Projekts im eigenen Unterricht.

In einem zweiten (Online-)Termin werden die Ergebnisse und Erfahrungen besprochen.

Dies ist die Auftaktveranstaltung einer neuen praxisorientierten Fortbildungsreihe zum Einsatz von Geschichten und Erzählpraktiken im Unterricht. Sie ist eine Kooperation zwischen der PHDL und der Narrative Didactics Forschungsgruppe der Universität Graz.

L033 - Digital Tools for Classroom Assessment · Update on on- and offline assessment approaches

The COVID pandemic and the emergency remote teaching have highlighted that there is an increasing need for teachers to be able to draw on both conventional and digital teaching methods. In this course, we discuss the fundamentals of what it means to assess language competences before considering how to augment the assessment of receptive and productive language skills through digital tools. It is the aim of this seminar to provide an overview of different approaches to online assessment while also including a practical component where participants can gain hands-on experience.

L045 - NILE meets PHDL webinar series 2021/22: · Beyond Comprehension Questions: Activities for Develping Receptive Skills

In this seminar we will explore how we can truly enhance listening and reading skills by helping our learners develop effective strategies rather than just testing them on their understanding through often somewhat meaningless comprehension questions. We will look at activities that get them to really think about the overall meaning and the deeper inferences of texts, whether spoken or written. Thus we can furnish them with lifelong skills that will serve them well even when exams are over.

L046 - Classroom language and simple instructions · Effective ways to organise and instruct your English classes

This seminar will show you how important it is to use English as the classroom language in your English lessons. It also aims to support you in giving instructions in a simplified way, so that all your pupils can understand you. Many innovative ideas will be introduced (and tried out by the seminar participants) in order to practise and consolidate the ideas. A list of typical Classroom Phrases will be provided, both in paper form and digitally.

L050 - Find your way in the digital jungle · Use digital media profitably instead of optimizing “old pedagogies”!

In this workshop, free websites, web 2.0 applications and apps for (mobile) language teaching are presented. The main focus lies on simplicity of the internet tools to be used (focus on didactics not on technology). Teachers are provided with a selection of applications and will be equipped for the digital jungle. Basic computer skills are required.

L062 - The Writing Adventure (off- and online) · Ways to establish Collaborative and Creative Writing Experiences

Writing is more than “teaching to the test”. Writing is a manifold process before, during, after and outside English class. We are looking at joyful and creative ways to boost students’ written production. The focus is on competences, collaborative methods and playful use of English. In addition to writing skills, these enhance language skills in general.

L076 - Shakespeare at play · Approaching, understanding and communicating Shakespeare’s language

The best way to understand Shakespeare’s language is to speak it. Starting by looking at what performative language aims to achive and how it is connected to the shape of a theatre space, theatre director and playwright Henry Mason, whose Shakepeare productions and translations have been performed at the Salzburg Festival, looks at playful ways to grasp and communicate the sound, feel, scope and sheer imagination of Shakespeare’s language. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to get physical!

The purpose of this seminar is to spice up regular EFL classes through age-appropriate and gripping reading materials. The games and activities described serve as an addition to coursebooks in order to breathe some life into them. The emphasis is on interaction and communication, trying to boost the learners‘ confidence and break the ice, so as to make them confident users of L2. Above all, the suggested activities will provide learners with a natural incentive to speak and give them ample leeway to practise and experiment with the target language

L905 - Getting Back on Track · Motivating tricks and brush up techniques for the new school year

The main emphasis will be on our own speaking abilities. There will be sufficient input of ideas and speaking activities, which can also be done in the class at different levels. We will indulge in small talk on various topics, express personal opinion on current topics, exchange practical tasks used in today’s English classroom and enjoy outdoor and indoor activities to motivate pupils to talk. ”Learning by Doing” is our motto, and it will be shown how very little preparation is required: minimum input, maximum output!
