This online series provides a virtual room for teachers to speak English, discuss research on ESL-teaching, exchange experiences, challenges, tips and tricks for the classroom. There is always a ’topic of interest’ and material to try out in class. Occasional ’surprise guests’ add an extra kick to the sessions.
Participants are also welcome to join only one or two of the meetings. Flexible participation is fine, too, even dates might be adapted. If you like speaking English and communicating with interesting colleagues, join us.

L044 - Introduction to Drama-based Language Learning · Reducing anxiety and exploring communication strategies

Drama-based teaching approaches have so many benefits that they have long been used in UK English classes as they allow for the authentic use of language in a stress-reduced environment with the added bonus of removing some of the artificiality that is often engrained in language tasks. In this course, we will experiment with drama activities ourselves in a very much hands-on approach to understand the benefits it can have for our students. Aimed at teachers with little to no previous drama experience, we also welcome those who’ve had a go before.

We are not trying to make the work easier for them, but just remove obstacles that may affect their learning. And the wonderful thing is that these measures usually help other learners in the class too. Win win!

Artificial Intelligence can be seen as full of promise or as a major threat. In this seminar we will explore the potential of AI in language teaching and learning. AI tools can be used to create a variety of learning resources, e.g. native-like texts for teaching purposes, prompts, video and audio transcripts, materials for differentiated learning, speaking activities, language corrections and feedback. The first results of an ECML project will be presented and we will also discuss ethical implications and how to raise the learners’ awareness of fair use of these tools.
